This year's Metal Hammer Awards were certainly a special occasion, not only because some of metal's finest standard-bearers - Tony Iommi, Lemmy etc - were gathered together under one roof but, most importantly, because of the incredible prescence and sense of gravitas brought to the awards by the standout act Nightwish with the inimitable Tarja Turunen.

For me in particular the awards were especially significant, I first got into Nightwish through their 'Wishmaster' album when the band, though a big success in metal-loving countries, were still relatively unknown in the UK. Because of their low profile I never thought I would be lucky enough to see them play once - no pun intended! - let alone four times!  Needless to say I am overjoyed that Nightwish are finally getting the recognition that they deserve for being, in my humble opinion, a groundbreaking, multi-talented group of individuals.

Even the short set which they played - consisting of 'Dark Chest of Wonders' , 'Nemo' and 'Wish I Had An Angel' - was stunning, I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed by the band's performances and the Metal Hammer Awards were no exception - from the majestic orchestral strains of 'Dark Chest of Wonders' to the - dare I say it! - metal anthem of 'Wish I Had An Angel' Nightwish were magnificent, the musicianship was amazing and words cannot even describe the power and passion of Tarja's vocals.

This review is certainly not meant to appear sychophantic and it is not - every single word is meant wholeheartedly, the memories of how happy Monday 13th of June 2005 made me will remain forever in my mind. Nightwish - long may they reign as the kings(and queen!) of modern metal!!!
