Article by John

It is the 4 track EP that I bought, and that is also what I would recommend to others. “From Wishes to Eternity” (available as a DVD, fairly rare CD, and Super Audio CD with 2 tracks missing) is such an impressive release that every Nightwish fan definately wants to buy all of that as well. Once you have done that then paying a full album price for an EP does not add up to value for money imo, and as you already have the live tracks then that is essentially what you are doing.

Starting with the title track, an excellent cover of the Gary Moore classic that alone makes it worth the purchase price. The quality id then kept up at excellent with one of their best ever songs – “Tenth Man Down” which is a real must hear. Unfortunately, just when the EP was starting to sound like it was going to make up in quality what it lacked in length, then along comes one of my least favourite Nightwsh songs – “Away”, a turgid ballad that is pleasant enough, but which nothing more can really be said for, except that it was the first Nightwish song where Tarja tried singing in a lower register than she used to. Uncharacteristically yawnsome.

Lastly there is a remake of one the best songs from their first album – “Astral Romance”. This may surprise some, but apart from Tony Kakko's vocals being much better than Tuomas's, I prefer the original to the remake. Just taking out Tuomas's vocals and getting Tony Kakko to sing them instead and keeping everything else the same would have been the best version of all (not to mention much cheaper and quicker than completely redoing the whole song like they have done here).
